The Monster and the Mermaid

Von Saint-Maximin: The product of a tryst between a French musician vacationing in Jamaica with his band, and the butler assigned to his suite. A bright boy, he runs the streets from an early age, doing his schoolwork when he does go to school, and getting involved in criminal activities when he doesn’t. By the time he’s twelve years old, he’s carrying out hits. His mother migrates with him to Florida and Von brings his criminal ways with him, refining his skills and learning how to live two lives simultaneously: a normal working-class citizen and a heartless assassin. A wolf hidden amongst the sheep.

Zaila Zahn: The product of a marriage between a Jamaican woman and a German businessman. A swimming prodigy, she sets the meet record and the fastest recorded time ever for a Jamaican swimmer in the 11-12 age group. Convinced that Zaila can go all the way to the top with first class training, the family migrates to Florida. They are correct. Zaila wins a bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics. She is only the second Jamaican swimmer to make it to an Olympic final, and the first to make it on the podium. Winning gold at the World Championships in Budapest is next on the agenda.

Their paths cross under dramatic circumstances, changing both their lives in spectacular fashion. A layered, nuanced, exciting tale that tackles love, family, friendship, ambition and betrayal.
